  • I have devised a plan to bring back Monkey quest (BMQB for short)

Step 1: Come up with an email to write to nick to see if we could have the Monkey Quest files so we can set up some sort of private server. (More about this after the steps)

Step 2: Send the email to NIckolodeon and wait for reply

Step 3: If Nickelodeon gives us the files, we begin setting up a private server, and if they don't, we end this project.

    Step 4: Play Monkey Quest

Now, to plan the email, I would like all of you people reading this to answer some questions.

Should I even go through with this?

Should I mention our little community in the email?

How many people are active on this wiki? (This is for how big the server needs to be)

      Loading editor
    • Also, in a week, I'll count up the answers, and please do not vote twice.

        Loading editor
    • Hello,I am a active member on the wiki, so count me in. I think this is a great idea, and definitely include this community, to show them we haven't died. This is ThatBoii, but I'm not logged in.

    • 1. Well, it's worth a try. If I were you I'd propose different things than just opening one "private server". E.g.: selling the game, recreating the game for 0-profit purposes (Ik that's pretty much this proposal too but you should include that, I think)...

      2. I think you should. It might convince them that there's people out there that want to play this game.

3.Well, I'm here, you (Alex), ThatBoii, Alyssa, Zapp, Steve, (5) then there's also other people that were on the wiki but became kind of inactive, like Carolina Goldenorb, Shy and Dry Guy, that other guy with a Yoshi pic, Abce2 (he's probably still active but it doesn't seem like it)... (4) This wiki doesn't have a permanent number of people on it. Also, Mysterious Shadow was also in Corrupt A Wish 2, but Idk if she's really that active, so you might wanna count that person too (1, duh). I'm most likely forgetting about a bunch of people too.

10-15 is a pretty good number for the server. Like I said, the amount of people on this Wiki changes over time, some people move on or they become really inactive, but return later. There's also new people joining every once in a while. But I'd say 10-15 (maybe even 20, idk), as an estimate, seems best to me. Keep in mind, we've been with more, maybe twice as much as now at some times, and also with less people. It'll change in the future.

Also, please copy-paste the email into a document on your PC or something, Nick gets tons of emails all the time so they might not see it. Also, could you post the email on this thread before sending it so we can make suggestions on things? Not necessary, just an idea.

I doubt this'll work, but keep in mind, there's been tons of other games with fans like us, those people remade the games they loved: ToonTown, Lego Universe etc. We should do the same for MQ!

Here is the email (parts may vary depending on answers):

Hello. Back in 2014 Nickelodeon owned a MMO game known as Monkey Quest that was shutdown due to a shift to mobile games. I am part of a community of 10 - 15 people (we talk on the forums of the monkey quest wikia) who would like to know if there is any way of setting up a non-profit, private server for monkey quest.

        Loading editor
    • Well, I would write a long, rambling post, but it's almost midnight here, so I'll do that some other time. A few quick suggestions: The email should probably be longer. (This is coming from a guy who wrote five pages for a one page assignment, but still.) Business emails tend to be formal and concise, but I believe (based on my prior experience with persuasive writing) that it should be more detailed. Also, we need a good reason for them to allow us to use the files. I doubt that they would give us permission for no reason. They would probably need profit of some sort (e.g. Ad revenue/a large fraction of membership profits (if we decide to do that), the rest of which would be needed to run the server. They would not pay for the server. Also, while a fifteen player group would be more manageable, that is almost definitely not enough to convince Nick. I'm thinking around a few hundred to maybe a thousand or so, even though most of them wouldn't be playing at the same time. According to the wiki dashboard (which I still don't fully get), we're getting around eighty to two hundred views a day, although those may just be page views. I have to go to sleep now, so I'll write the rest of this when possible.

    • That's better, but I believe that it could still use work to convince them. Moderation would likely be a problem, but it would be less significant if the server was private. Also, we might need a company for Nickelodeon to transfer its property to, but I don't think that would be a problem if it's not official. Another point is that I doubt any of us have lawyers, and although I know two people studying law, one of them is very busy, and the other one is only in high school. Anyways, I would be willing to write a researched (and by that I mean plenty of reddit, stack exchange, and googling) email for you to make input on. However, I'm going to be away without much time to write until the thirteenth. I'll post status reports for anything I find, though. I realize that by the time enough input has been given and I finish the email, summer will be over for some of us, but I personally believe that a good first impression before we open negotiation (if necessary) is the best route to success.

    • Hi everyone! A few things have been happening in my life recently that prevent me from focusing on this as much as I would like too, so I would like to either:

      1. Step down as leader of this project and have someone else take my place.

      or

      2. Try my best to keep going.

Is anyone willing to carry on this project.

        Loading editor
    • Well, I wouldn't say I would like to lead, but I would be willing to support it in part.

        Loading editor
    • Being "leader" of this project is a big word. In the end, the leader is just as much a part of the discussion as everyone else, the only difference is that you have to write the message to Nick.

I doubt they'll be willing to reopen it for us, remember, they're a company, I don't see how they'd do this just to make us happy. They won't get any economic benefit from it. But personally, I feel like we need to suggest more than just one thing (private server), but other ideas we've come up with on the old MQ forums and the MQ Wiki forums, such as a fan made game that we wouldn't get any profit from, selling it... As for selling, I'm also kind of afraid that just like with Petpet Park, they can't transfer the coding of Monkey Quest and all that, since that's why they couldn't sell PP - but I'm really not sure of that, there's no way I can tell. We should try that.

Right now, I'm on holiday in Italy, so I can't write anything. We could also all help writing it.

        Loading editor
    • Again, I would write, if that would be the role of the "leader", but I'm going to be in France until the thirteenth. Meanwhile, I suppose we could just brainstorm. We'd probably need some sort of monetary transfer system, so that would likely be a major road block, at least for me.

        Loading editor
    • This was an accidental post. Carry on reading the thread.

        Loading editor
    • I don't know if it helps, but I think adding the "don't close Monkey Quest" petition or other petitions like that in the message should show Nickleodeon that not only "a small group of people willing to work on this project" wanted to know if there's any way to bring this amazing game back. I found one here. Although it's closed, it still got plenty of supporters. Maybe the petions will make the message more powerful to convince Nick.

By the way, which way are you guys planning to use to contack Nick/which email address you guys are planning to send the message to?

        Loading editor
    • I'm extending step 1 another week. Also, I will see if I can link the petition in the email.

        Loading editor
    • Well, I personally don't think that we need to link to the petition, especially since many more have been made, but we could allude to it in the email with something like this: "In addition, several petitions have been written over the years that the game has been closed, many receiving hundreds, if not thousands, of signatures." I think that this might work as well/better because petition sites aren't the most reliable things ever, although this was one of the better-written ones.

        Loading editor
    • Another thing, we would need someone to actually host it. Anyone have a powerful computer handy? Also, if anyone has an undeleted copy of the game, maybe send it to me and me and my friend can have a look at it sometime? I'll see if I can find any image files that I can use on this wiki, and my friend can read a few code languages (I remember someone from the "Will Monkey Quest Come Back?" Thread a while ago did).

Well, I really don't know how to send files. I know how to turn a computer on and off and how to use keyboard and mouse, but apart from that I really don't know much. I doubt that with my files, you'll have a different result than with anyone else's. • THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT!

If you installed the MQ files you will find a folder called "Monkey Quest". In that folder there are folders called pa, game, and launcher. The folder called "game" contains MQ assets (textures, sounds, scripts) and the ACTUAL MONKEY QUEST GAME. If you try running Monkeyquest.exe in the "game" folder it will bring up the dark green loading screen. After that the screen goes black and it won't work. The program is waiting for the server. My theory is that if you can find somthing that can mimic the server you will be able to play.

(both made by kingsilse entertainment) Wizard 101 is about adventuring through a world and using spell cards in a turn based battle system to battle monsters (the story is blah though) and Pirate 101 is about being a pirate and doing pirate ship battles and stuff (don't worry there is also land combat), it has a fire emblem type battle system but it's really fun. Both great except you are restricted from some areas unless you fork over money for a membership. My explainations are trash and I may have made you not want to play them but I suggest you give them a try.

Maybe it will answer in a few months, but we don't have the time to wait( I mean real people who love it will wait) ut what if they say no? What we need is a professional hacker/scripter/stuff like that. People managed to fix a game when the creators of the game couldn't ( don't remember the actual game name), which means if we try to edit the text files, and other files that are unopenable which could be opened using a specific program.

Exactly. All we need to do is contact Nick, and tell them exactly what we are doing. We must claim that we are only rebuilding a server for a collective personal use, no profit, no TMNT or Power Rangers, no anything. We must state the effort from many nostalgic fans who've been here from the beginning (which is the end of MQ, XD) and we have been working on this project for almost three years. Please, Alexthewizard, you might be our last hope, please contact them. This can work.

    • I'd love this so much. Sadly I can't really do anything as I don't know anything about coding/scripting/anything like that or where to find it, also the computer which I used to have MQ on broke and I had to get rid of it so that's not a possibility for me. But, I can be here for support, I guess. And stay hopeful. One of my old favorite games, Toontown Online, closed, and then some people got some code or something from Disney and they remade it. And it's just like the original with only a few things missing. This might happen to MQ one day too, you know where there is a will there is a way

    • Hey, do you guys think, that if we contacted Nick (the legit way), and asked them if I could buy the game off (FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY) I'd be able to play, like, just alone, by myself? Do you think they would charge or what? Just an idea...

Idk, but if you did, you probably couldn't go a lot of places because of those three monkey pressure plates

    • Hey, David. I don't know the answer. The game waits for a response from the server (Which shut down) so there is no way to play the game. I don't know how unity works that well but you can give it a try. Maybe you can test the game without the server in unity but I don't know. There is a remake of Monkey Quest in the works though.

No. Not yet. I heard someone say their trademark expires soon, but it's not proven yet. Still, it's something. Also the weirdest things happen to me, once I was just thinking "Man I wish this game would be back" a shooting star randomly appeared in the sky. Also just a few minutes ago I thought "Can MQ really come back?" And a really harsh ring started in my ears then faded out. So weird. Maybe I'm just insane.

    • Well, if a conversation I overheard is correct, the trademark won't expire for another hundred years or so, sadly.

        Loading editor
    • What? That can't be. I looked up how long trademarks last and it said they're only effective for ten years. However, they can be renewed so if Nickelodeon decides to renew it whenever it expires then we're screwed. Also, the trademark should be good until October 25, 2021. So yeah. And if it wears off I don't think we automatically can remake it. I know nothing about legal stuff (lol I'm a kid) but, I think we would still need Nick's permission. Say I have a game called Monky Quest (I know very original). I copyright it on January 1, 2000. It closes in June 9, 2012. On May 5, 2017 someone wants to claim Monky Quest as their own. Because the trademark has worn off does that mean they can do that? Maybe this is a horrible example cuz I known nothing but idk

Oh, I see. The site might not be credible, though, and it's just an estimate. By the way, that's the renewal deadline, and it either means one of two things by my logic. One being it renews on that date, or they have to renew it by that date.

Btw, Luminex cancelled MQR because of the lead developer's personal issues, not legal matters, as far as I know. They said it's still possible to reboot MQR without much coding knowledge, which is good. I think it's on the thread "will monkey quest come back? v4"

Also, I think we can still remake MQR even if the trademark is renewed. Trademarks protect the brand, not the product. For example, Toontown Online renewed its trademark in 2015. Despite this, Toontown Rewritten is still running legally. As long as we don't call it Monkey Quest, use their logo, or say it's by Nickelodeon, I think it's fine. Do not take my word for this.
